Jürgen Becker (writer)
Jürgen Becker (born July 10, 1932 in Cologne ) is a German poet , prose writer and radio play author .
life and work
Jürgen Becker's family moved from Cologne to Erfurt in 1939 , so that he experienced a war childhood in Thuringia. In 1947 he went to Waldbröl in West Germany. In 1950 he moved back to his native Cologne. From 1950 to 1953 he attended a high school there until he graduated from high school. He then began studying German , which he broke off in 1954.
In the following years he carried out various activities. From 1959 to 1964 he was an employee of the West German Broadcasting Corporation and from 1964 to 1966 editor at Rowohlt-Verlag . He has been a freelance writer since 1968 . From 1973 he was head of the Suhrkamp - Theaterverlag and from 1974 to 1993 head of the radio play department at Deutschlandfunk . Becker has been married to the artist Rango Bohne since 1965 and lives near Cologne, in Odenthal in the Bergisches Land .
Jürgen Becker emerged in the 1960s with a strongly experimental type of literature that relied primarily on the open form as an opposition to conventional narration. This impulse is withdrawn in later texts, while the landscape still plays an important role in Becker's poetry. In addition to the poems that make up his main work, Becker also wrote short stories and radio plays. Since 1994 his contributions have been published in the journal Sinn und Form published by the Academy of the Arts (Berlin) .
In the justification for the Georg Büchner Prize , which Becker was awarded in 2014, he is recognized as "a decisive voice in contemporary poetry" who "has decisively shaped German-language poetry over generations". His poems taught readers to perceive the world and language more closely. They made "our everyday world visible and unforgettable in a new way."
From 1960 on, Becker was a member of Group 47 , whose literary prize he won at the group's last meeting in 1967. Since 1969 he has been a member of the PEN Center Germany and the Academy of Arts (Berlin), since 1974 of the German Academy for Language and Poetry , since 1984 of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz and since 2009 of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and the arts .
In 2012, under the title “In der Hölle des Schweigens” Der Writer Jürgen Becker, the first documentary about Jürgen Becker by Christoph Felder, an 80-minute portrait (b / w, Verlag Die Neue Sachlichkeit, production CFF) with his own words and some a few short excerpts from his colleagues Günter Grass, Uwe Johnson and Hans Magnus Enzensberger (group 47).
Becker's son is the photographer and filmmaker Boris Becker .
