background

The Great Literature Prize is the successor to the Literature Prize , which was awarded from 1950 to 1985. The winners of the Great Literature Prize and now the Thomas Mann Literature Prize are selected by an independent jury that is re-elected every three years. It consists of three members of the Academy and two outsiders from the university sector or free literary life (writers, literary scholars and critics).

In connection with the Great Literature Prize, the Wilhelm Hausenstein Award is given for services to cultural mediation. It is endowed with 5,000 euros and replaces the literary gift of honor that was awarded between 1952 and 1985.
