Martha Saalfeld

Martha Saalfeld (* (Martha vom Scheidt) 15. January 1898 in Landau (Palatinate) , † 14. March 1976 in Bad Bergzabern ) was a German poet and novel writer .

Life and literary career

At the age of seven, Martha Saalfeld was given to Landau's grandmother by her ailing mother; her mother died in 1913. She attended the municipal high school for girls in Landau until 1914 , where the director Carl Friedrich Müller-Palleske encouraged her literary inclinations. In 1915, Saalfeld was on duty in the war hospital, and in 1921 she passed the Abitur as an external student in Kaiserslautern .

She studied philosophy and art history in Heidelberg . She broke off a doctoral thesis in philosophy that had begun with Karl Jaspers in 1927. Rudolf G. Binding brokered her first poetry publications.

In 1928 Saalfeld married the graphic artist Werner vom Scheidt and began training as a pharmacy assistant in Landau. In 1931 she published poems, and in 1932 her tragic comedy Evidence for Kleber premiered . During this time she worked in pharmacies in Worms , Düsseldorf and Babenhausen . Martha Saalfeld was a member of the Palatinate Literary Association . In the Third Reich she had great difficulties as an author, and in 1937 a publication ban was imposed on her.

In 1948 Saalfeld moved to Bad Bergzabern. There she was literarily very productive, poems, stories and novels appeared in quick succession. She received appreciations and a. by Hermann Hesse , Stefan Zweig and Elisabeth Langgässer . The fairytale, magical and daydreaming elements were particularly emphasized in her works.

Saalfeld was a member of the SPD and was involved in the fight against atomic death .

After her death in Bad Bergzabern, she was buried in her native Landau. The Martha-Saalfeld-Förderpreis of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate is named after her.
