Elisabeth Schnack
Elisabeth Schnack (born December 23, 1899 as Elisabeth Schüler in Joachimsthal / Uckermark , † February 14, 1992 in Zurich ) was a Swiss translator of literary works and a writer .
Life
Elisabeth Schnack was the daughter of a botanist . She trained as a high school teacher and went to the Republic of China in 1924 , where she founded a private school in Mukden ( Manchuria ). She married a German merchant with whom she had two sons. In 1938 she went to Switzerland . She studied English literature at the University of Geneva , then taught at a translation school and stayed in Dublin for nine months . From 1950 she worked as a literary translator in Zurich. Here she made an important contribution to the reception of English-language literature from Great Britain , Ireland , North America and the Commonwealth in the German-speaking area. She has also written books with portraits of the authors she has translated.

- 1986 Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany .
