Lindsey Davis (born August 21, 1949 in Birmingham ) is a British writer best known for her historical crime novels about the Roman detective Marcus Didius Falco .

Live and act

After studying English literature at Lady Margaret Hall College ( Oxford University ), she entered the civil service, which she left after thirteen years. After a romance novel she had written won second place in the 1985 Georgette Heyer Historical Novel Prize competition , she decided to pursue a career as a writer and initially wrote serial romance novels for the British women's magazine Woman's Realm .

Her interest in history and archeology led to a historical novel about the Roman Emperor Vespasian and his lover Antonia Caenis ( The Course of Honor , Eng. The Emperor's Companion ), for which she could not find a publisher. She tried again with a detective novel set in the same era, The Silver Pigs (German silver pigs ). This very successful novel about the Roman investigator Marcus Didius Falco , published in 1989, was followed by 19 sequels and an accompanying book by 2010. Her first novel about Vespasian was finally published in 1998.

After two other historical novels published in 2009 and 2012, Davis began a new series of historical detective novels in 2013 about the Roman investigator Flavia Albia , Falco's adopted daughter.
