The St. Stephen's Chapel or St. Stephan im Feld was the first church in Asselheim and was located in the old cemetery above the village to the north.

history

The St. Stephen's Chapel belonged to the “ St. Maria im Rosendale ” monastery , which was founded in 1241 as a Cistercian convent in the village of Rosenthal (today a district of Kerzenheim ). It is assumed that the chapel was built shortly after the monastery was founded or that it already existed before.
The historical sources give no information about why it was not in the place. Perhaps in early Christian times the church was built on the site of a pagan shrine in honor of the martyr Saint Stephen .

This chapel played a special role for the village for many centuries and was, so to speak, the religious center. At least from 1250 a clergyman appointed by the monastery exercised pastoral care.

From 1261 the Worms Bishop Eberhard determines his income. Then he has to claim the tithe belonging to the Church . The St. Stephen's Chapel must be seen in connection with the Asselheim women's courtyard , a monastery-owned, self-managed courtyard , which, with the chapel, played an important role in village life. The farm still exists today, it is the Langgase / corner Auweg property.

Another significance of the affiliation of St. Stephen's Chapel and Nonnenhof to the monastery was for the people of that time that the place was a court of law for many centuries .

The chapel was demolished around 1819. The church patron St. Stephan remained on the Asselheim town seal and in the earlier town coat of arms until the 20th century. One of the vineyards in the town limits still bears his name today.
