Großkarlbach is a local community in the Palatinate district of Bad Dürkheim , which is part of the Leiningerland community. The place is about 15 km northwest of Ludwigshafen am Rhein on the edge of the European metropolitan region Rhine-Neckar .
Geography and geology
Großkarlbach is located near the western edge of the Rhine plain and is traversed by the Eckbach . In the west of the municipality, the hills of the former Unterhaardt 1) ) rise , which has been part of the new Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstrasse wine-growing region since the 1970s . Neighboring towns are (clockwise from the north) Laumersheim , Gerolsheim , Weisenheim am Sand , Freinsheim and Bissersheim . The village of Kleinkarlbach , however, is 6 km further west on the slope of the Leininger Sporn .
history
Großkarlbach was mentioned as Carlobach in the Lorsch Codex as early as 768 . The name goes back to the name of the village of the Freie Karle and the location on the Eckbach. Since the place was in the border area between the Electoral Palatinate and the territory of the Counts of Leiningen , it was these two ruling houses that shaped Grosskarlbach's history.
Until 1969 the place belonged to the then dissolved Frankenthal (Pfalz) district and then moved to the newly created Bad Dürkheim district. Three years later it was assigned to the also new community of Grünstadt-Land , which was merged into the community of Leiningerland in 2018.

In 2007, 50.8% of the population were Protestant and 20.6% Catholic. The rest belonged to another religion or were non-denominational.

The local mayor is Paul Schläfer (FWG). He was elected in the local elections on May 26, 2019 with a share of 81.58% of the vote, making him the successor to Ralf-Peter Riegel (SPD).

Sights and culture
Architectural monuments
Six of the former seven mills still exist in Großkarlbach. Down the Eckbach these are: Mühle am Weiher, Schlossmühle, Rheinmühle, Dorfmühle , Pappelmühle and Heckmühle. After the completion of its restoration (2007), the village mill houses the Leiningerland mill museum , the mayor's office , the community archive as well as youth, senior citizens and conference rooms.
Large wineries with their half-timbered houses characterize the place. Other sights include the 48-meter-high tower of the Protestant church in the center of the village and a clay factory where ceramic products are made.
In 1987, Großkarlbach received a bronze plaque in the national competition Our village should become more beautiful .
Culture
In 1990 the Sieben Mühlen Art and Culture Association was founded, which got its name from the village's mill tradition.
Regular events
There are traditional festivals in Großkarlbach. These include the Kändelgasse Festival on the last weekend of July, which radiates beyond the region , the Kerwe in September and the Christmas market. The Long Night of Jazz took place for the first time in 2002 and was part of the Germany - Land of Ideas campaign in 2006 , the patron of which was then Federal President Horst Köhler . In addition, the local clubs hold smaller events.

The place is located near the German Wine Route on the Eckbach-Mühlenwanderweg in the tourist -oriented holiday region of Leiningerland . In addition to holiday apartments there are two hotels. The most important branch of agriculture is viticulture .

Großkarlbach is connected to the Autobahn 6 ( Saarbrücken - Mannheim ) via junction 19 Grünstadt , which is five kilometers away .
Until 1939, the place was the terminus of a narrow-gauge railway opened in 1891, the local railway , which was popularly called "Bembel" because of the tinkling of its warning bell. It led via Dirmstein and Heßheim to Frankenthal and also had a connection to Ludwigshafen am Rhein on tram tracks .
Personalities
- Anton Spiehler (1795–1867) was bishop secretary, clergyman and cathedral capitular of the diocese of Speyer , subregens of the diocesan seminary and summus custos ( lat. For supreme guardian ) of the Speyer cathedral . He was a local Catholic priest from 1819 to 1827.
- August Brehm (1854–1931) was cathedral capitular , cathedral dean and provost of the diocese of Speyer, papal house prelate , addressed as monsignor and privy councilor of the Free State of Bavaria. He was a local Catholic priest from 1883 to 1889.
- Bernhard Schelenz (* 1963) founded Schelenz GmbH on site in 2001 and runs a training center there.
