August Brehm (born October 15, 1854 in Pirmasens , † June 21, 1931 in Speyer ) was a Catholic priest , cathedral capitular , cathedral dean and provost of the diocese of Speyer and papal house prelate . Because of his decided opposition to separatist rule in the Autonomous Palatinate , he was later appointed privy councilor of the Free State of Bavaria.

Origin and career

August Brehm was born into a civil servant family in Pirmasens. He attended grammar school in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse and Speyer. After an excellent high school diploma, he began his studies at the Germanicum in Rome. However, he had to break this off due to illness in order to continue it later in Würzburg and Eichstätt . During his studies he became a member of the KDStV Markomannia Würzburg in the CV in 1872 . In Eichstätt, Brehm was ordained a priest on August 24, 1877.

He then worked from 1877 to 1882 as chaplain in his home diocese of Speyer, in Homburg , Landau , Deidesheim and Pirmasens . In 1883 August Brehm took over the parish of Großkarlbach near Grünstadt , which he held until 1889 and where he also served as district school inspector. From 1889 to 1909 Brehm was the parish priest and also district school inspector in Landau. There he had the Marienkirche built, the largest church in the diocese after the Speyer Cathedral.

On September 24, 1909, Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria appointed the priest as cathedral capitular and cathedral dean in Speyer. As a canon in the diocese leadership, Brehm was used in many ways. Among other things, he worked as an official , consultant for church construction and board member of various church bodies. He also advanced to become a royal clergyman and director of the diocese's general clergy. Pope Benedict XV appointed August Brehm as Provost of the Cathedral on January 31, 1918. The clergyman also had the title of papal house prelate with the salutation "Monsignore" and was holder of the Bavarian Order of Merit of St. Michael IV class with a crown.

At the time of the separatist rule, in the so-called Autonomous Palatinate , 1923/24, the Speyer canon came forward because of his loyalty to the Free State of Bavaria and was supposed to be expelled by the separatist government, but this did not happen. Brehm was one of the most prominent opponents of the separatists and was harassed and spied on by them. After the legitimate state order was restored, the Bavarian government awarded the indomitable cathedral provost the honorary title of a state privy councilor.

August Brehm was ailing from the age of 75 and died at the age of 76 in Speyer. At the funeral, which took place in Speyer on June 23, 1931, among others, Bishop Ludwig Sebastian and District President Dr. Theodor Pfülf took part.
