The Catholic parish church of St. Maria is in the city center of Landau / Pfalz , directly on the Südring. It is the most powerful church in the entire southern Palatinate. Because of its overwhelming size in the neo-Romanesque cathedral style, it is also called the Landau Cathedral . The church is listed in the register of cultural monuments of the independent city of Landau.
History and dimensions
In 1907 the Catholic Church Council of Landau decided to build a new, larger and more modern church in the newly created district of Landau-Süd, after the Augustinian Church on Königsstraße had become too small. In 1908 the foundation stone for the Marienkirche was laid according to plans by Joseph Cades , Stuttgart. Around 1910 the church was ready to be built with the exception of the two towers. 1911 then the church by then was Speyer bishop and later archbishop of Munich and Freising, Michael von Faulhaber solemnly inaugurated .
The Marienkirche is after the Speyer cathedral and the monastery church of Otterberg together with the Speyer memorial church the third largest church building in the Palatinate. The church is a total of 73 m long, 40 m wide and with the two west towers 60 m high. In the interior, the church is dedicated to the late Romanesque with early Gothic forms. Arched windows and buttresses based on the Chartres model determine the exterior.
During the Second World War the sacristy of the church was destroyed by bombing and was later rebuilt in a modern style. The 3.5 m high statue of the Virgin Mary with a child made of wood is particularly worth seeing in the Marienkirche . The church can be entered via the north side entrance on Marienring.
organ
The organ of the Marienkirche was built in 1924 by the organ builder G. F. Steinmeyer & Co. ( Oettingen ) with 70 sounding stops on three manuals and pedal (plus two transmissions into the pedal). In the 1950s the instrument was rebuilt and adapted to the sound ideals of the time ("baroque"). In addition, the previous prospectus was replaced by a free pipe prospectus. Between 2010 and 2012 the organ was extensively restored with the aim of restoring the original late-romantic state of 1924. Of the approx. 4,500 original pipes , approx. 3,500 have been preserved, as well as a large part of the technical system. The historical prospectus has been reconstructed. The following disposition shows the restored condition from 1924. The two swell works are each expanded up to (g 4 ). Registers 33 and 34 are in a special swell box.

Bells
On June 12, 1953, six bells were cast in the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock from Gescher in Westphalia. Master Hans Hüesker was responsible for casting the bell . Finally, the bells for the Marienkirche could be received in a joint celebration with the new bells of the collegiate church on July 4, 1953 on the Rathausplatz. The following day there was a solemn consecration of the bells by Bishop Isidor Markus Emanuel . This unique bell is considered one of the best in the foundry among experts. The big Christ the King bell hangs in the right tower, the other five bells in the left tower. In 2008 all bells received new clappers to improve the sound acoustics. In the ringing order, the angelus is rung with bell c 1 . The full bells are used on public holidays and on very special occasions.
