Village mill in Kändelgasse

The Kändelgassenfest is celebrated every year on the last weekend of July in the Upper Palatinate wine-growing village of Großkarlbach , which is part of the Leiningerland community . It is the largest wine festival in the Leiningerland and behind crowd-pullers such as Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt and German Wine Festival, one of the great wine festivals in the Palatinate . The visitors come not only from this region, but also from Rheinhessen and the Hessian - Baden Rhine - Neckar region .

In about 500 entries comprehensive wine festival calendar 2006, which the for the Palatinate wine region responsible Marketing Association Pfalzwein e. V. published, the Kändelgassenfest was highlighted as the “most beautiful wine festival in the Palatinate”.

history

The street festival was created in 1980 to keep alive the more than 1200-year history of the village, which was first mentioned in 768. This is characterized by viticulture , the Eckbach and the once seven mills that were operated on the area of the municipality in the Middle Ages and five of which are still more or less well preserved. The festival takes place in the eponymous Kändelgasse , which with its restored half-timbered houses forms the historical core of the community. The lane leads - roughly parallel to the higher main road - in the valley floodplain of the Eckbach along its left bank and is also part of the Eckbach-Mühlenwanderweg . It is named after the wooden channel that ran on stilts to supply the two mill wheels of the village mill with water, and which was then known as the "Kandel" . With the help of the channel, on the one hand, the steep incline of the Eckbach was compensated for, on the other hand, an overshot mill operation independent of its changing water flow was made possible.

Within a few years, the Kändelgassenfest became more important than the Großkarlbacher Kerwe in early autumn. Possibly because of the more favorable weather conditions in midsummer, it developed from a local to a supraregional event, which first radiated into the surrounding Leiningerland (districts Bad Dürkheim , Donnersbergkreis and Alzey-Worms ). Since around the mid-1990s, the festival has been attracting more and more visitors from the wider area, some of whom have also become regular overnight guests .

In the Kändelgasse, the Eckbach is covered over a stretch with a five to six meter wide sandstone vault, which serves as a sidewalk and leads over the property entrances. Because "cracks, damaged abutments, deformations and leached joints" were found and there is a "risk of collapse", it will be renovated in 2015 and 2016. During this time, no vehicles may be parked or sales stands may be set up on the vault. The Kändelgassenfest was therefore canceled for 2015 and 2016.

Duration and location

The Kändelgassenfest lasts from Friday to Sunday; During the three festive days, the parking lot situation is extremely tense and the community is closed to through traffic. The closure affects in particular the state roads 455 ( Freinsheim - Dirmstein ) and 520 ( Kirchheim - Heßheim ), which cross the town on the main road.

The center of the festival is the square in front of the village mill. Since its restoration in 2007, it has housed a. a. the Leiningerland mill museum , which has additional opening times during the festival. From there, the festival mile extends about 300 m up Kändelgasse to the Rheinmühle. Part of the Weiherwiesen district and the castle mill are still included in the festival.

procedure

The festival, which has the Palatinate motto “Fun uff de Gass”, is mainly a social and culinary event. Therefore, there are no rides - with the exception of a small children's carousel. Catering with Palatinate specialties and regional wines takes place in nine wineries , which have large wine press houses or barns , as well as at numerous stands . Because of its diverse and sometimes demanding range of music, the festival in the Palatinate has a prominent position; on the festival mile distributed bands and bands playing both rock and beat and folk and Guggenmusik .

The highlight of the Kändelgassenfest - in addition to the free wine at the beginning of the festival - is the traditional barrel rolling competition, which is started on the final day at 11 a.m. by the Leiningerland wine countess . Wooden wine barrels are used, which, because of their bulbous shape, are difficult to move straight on along the path, which is delimited by straw bales. In 2007, 25 men, eight women and six children took part in the individual races. The participants came not only from Germany, but also from Australia , Ireland , Hungary , Ukraine and the USA .
