The Verbandsgemeinde belonged to five independent local communities , the administrative seat was in the eponymous community Hettenleidelheim .

On January 1, 2018, the Hettenleidelheim association was dissolved and the associated communities were assigned to the new Leiningerland association.

The community of Hettenleidelheim was re-established in 1972, like all community communities in the then administrative district of Rheinhessen-Pfalz , on the basis of the “Thirteenth State Law on Administrative Simplification in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate”. Until then, the administrative structures originating from the Palatinate (Bavaria) (1816-1946) existed.
