Höninger protection letters

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Höninger Schutzbriefe are two important documents from Pope Innocent II and from Emperor Friedrich I (Barbarossa) from the years 1143 and 1160 respectively . They refer to the Augustinian Canons' Monastery of Höningen, founded around 1120 by Count Emich II of Leiningen (Leiningen) , and guaranteed the monastery (also called Hagenehe) protection for residents and property. This exemplifies the interweaving between politics and religion in the High Middle Ages .
