Duke Nukem Forever ( DNF for short ) is a computer game released on June 10, 2011 . The first person shooter is the successor to Duke Nukem 3D . With its long development time of 14 years and repeatedly postponed release dates, it has long been one of the most famous vaporware products. The project has since been discontinued, but Gearbox Software took over the development of 3D Realms in 2009 and announced in May 2011 that the development of Duke Nukem Forever had been completed.
action
The game starts with the main character Duke Nukem urinating in a urinal . The toilet turns out to be part of a cubicle in a football stadium. The Duke goes into a room with some soldiers and a blackboard, on which he can contribute his part to the plan after an operations briefing by drawing on the blackboard. The action in this room is entered into the arena of the stadium and seen facing a 10 meter high cyclops, which you had to defeat in Duke Nukem 3D. After he was killed with the Devastator, also known from Duke Nukem 3D , you can score a field goal with his eye.
After completing the level, it turns out that everything was just a game in the game and the Duke was lying on his sofa and being spoiled by the Holsom Twins . This scene is indicated in the first person perspective. After the scene you take the elevator with the twins in Duke first person view to a talk show that you are invited to. But this is canceled and instead you learn that the aliens are back on earth and have attacked a Dukeburger restaurant. On the way back to the apartment he beats an actor who is arguing with an employee. Back in the apartment, he enters the Duke Cave and begins a conversation with the Secretary of Defense, who explains to the Duke that the President wants to make peace with the aliens and that he should stay out of the matter. However, the Duke knows the aliens too well and suspects that they want to wipe out humans.
Shortly afterwards, the Duke is attacked by the aliens. With the gun on his roof, he destroys part of the alien mother ship. However, this is destroyed after a while, and the Duke takes his elevator back to his apartment.
development
Duke Nukem Forever was officially announced for the first time on April 27, 1997 at E3 . The actual development began at the end of 1997, after prototypes had already been made on the basis of outdated technology.
Just one year later, the development team switched from the Quake 2 engine to the first generation of the Unreal Engine , which made it necessary to revise a very large part of the previous game.
In 2000, the game's underlying engine was changed again. However, this time they stayed true to the technology used so far and updated the Unreal engine to development branch 1.5.
2002 is generally seen as a restart of the project. After switching to a current version of the Unreal engine (2.0), 3D Realms hired several new programmers and rewrote large parts of the Unreal engine, especially the part of the engine that was responsible for displaying the 3D graphics. The finished product, which for the first time could be considered complete, supported many modern graphic effects such as shaders , normal mapping and high dynamic range rendering . George Broussard (lead designer of the project at 3D Realms) emphasized several times in interviews that only a few parts still correspond to those of the Unreal engine, namely UnrealScript , the network code and the level editor. Everything else - except for the Meqon physics engine - was written from scratch by the 3D Realms team.
In 2003 Broussard announced that the game should only be made available in English with multilingual subtitles. The aim was to avoid unsuccessful synchronization. In the end, the game appeared synchronized .
On December 19, 2007, a new teaser trailer was released showing parts of the engine currently in use. On June 5, 2008, Jace Hall, founder of Monolith Productions , featured an interview with Scott Miller and George Broussard of 3D Realms in the opening sequence of his online show. This was followed by a number of in-game scenes from Duke Nukem Forever.
Temporary suspension of development and resumption
On May 6, 2009 it was announced that the manufacturer 3D Realms had ceased operations and laid off its employees. On May 18, 2009, however, it was announced that 3D Realms would continue to exist, albeit as a much smaller company, as many employees had been laid off. A further development of Duke Nukem Forever therefore still seemed possible. The publishing rights are owned by Take 2 , 3D Realms owns the rights to the brand. In the first edition of the US magazine Gamesauce in December 2009, 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller contradicted allusions that the development of Duke Nukem Forever had been "discontinued". According to Miller, the dismissal of one's own development team does not necessarily mean that the project will disappear.
On April 5, 2010 a new trailer was released, which contains old and new scenes.
On September 3, 2010, Gearbox announced at the Penny Arcade Expo that Duke Nukem Forever would be available for PC , Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 during 2011 . At the computer game convention PAX 2010 there was already a playable demo that same month.
In January 2011, an official game scene trailer was released, which announced May 3, 2011 as the release date. In March 2011, the release date was postponed to June 2011. In May 2011 it was announced that the game had reached gold status, i.e. that it was completely finished and ready for sale. On June 3, 2011, a playable demo version was released for a select group of users before the game actually appeared in the middle of the month. A version for Mac OS X followed in August 2011 .
The US radio presenter and dubbing actor Jon St. John lends Duke Nukem his voice again, as in the predecessor Duke Nukem 3D .
Long development time
Because of this unusually long development period of the game was the three times in 2000, 2001 and 2002 vaporware award from Wired awarded magazine, to finally 2003 even a prize called vaporware Lifetime Achievement Award (dt .: Award for Lifetime Achievement ) to obtain . George Broussard accepted the award with the words "We are undoubtedly late and we know it".
Actually DNF should be excluded from the evaluation in the future after the award of honor was presented, but this decision was dropped after reader protests. As a result, Duke Nukem Forever was also number one on the list in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2009 the game was removed from the list due to the uncertainty surrounding the dismissal of the 3D Realms employees, but it is still mentioned in the introduction. In the following year (2010) the Duke was ranked 11th in the top 10 as " King of Vaporware, The Sultan of Suck, the Chief Executive Officer of Fail " (English: "King of Vaporware, the Sultan of Failure, the managing director of the Failure ”).
When asked about a fixed release date, the developers at 3D Realms were happy to answer “ When it's done! ”(German:“ When it's done! ”). You were referring to the English phrase “ It's done, when it's done ” (German: “ It's done when it's done ”).
3D Realms shaped this expression so much that it is now understood by gamers and fans of the computer game series as a running gag . Duke Nukem Forever was sometimes called Duke Nukem For never or Duke Nukem Whenever .
Achievements
On May 13, 2011, more details about Duke Nukem Forever became known. In the retail version, 50 achievements await the players as rewards for the Xbox 360. Some of these achievements are awarded for side tasks, such as playing a pinball machine or for drinking beer in the single player campaign. Multiplayer achievements are not available. In the PlayStation 3 and the Steam version of the PC version, players can look forward to a total of 51 and 62 trophies respectively, all of which can also be won in the single player campaign.
With the expansion The Doctor Who Cloned Me another 12 achievements were added.
reception
In Europe, Duke Nukem Forever received mixed ratings despite years of euphoria. It had to take a lot of criticism because of the outdated technology. Overall, the graphics are no longer up to date. The long loading times on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were also criticized. Further points of criticism are performance drops in multiplayer mode and the weak AI . Not all critics liked the humor either. The varied gameplay, the interactive game world and the above-average length of the game were praised. The game also has a certain nostalgia bonus . The only exception to the evaluation scheme was the online portal tvgc.de, which took the socio-cultural aspect into account in Duke Nukem Forever and gave it the highest rating out of competition.
In August 2011, Take 2 announced that Duke Nukem Forever was becoming a profitable title for the publisher despite mixed reviews, even if sales were below expectations.
Sexism controversy
The American conservative broadcaster Fox News reported negative about Duke Nukem Forever around two and a half months before the game was released and criticized the first-person shooter as sexist . Reasons are the multiplayer mode Capture the Babe (variant of Capture the Flag ), in which you can hit women on the buttocks, and the (implied) representation of oral sex by twins in school uniform. Jamia Wilson, vice president of the Women's Media Center, condemned this portrayal of women as extremely harmful, especially to young women . The game also caused a stir in Australia. There, the game has been approved for ages 15 and over.
German version
The German version of Duke Nukem Forever received an age rating of 18 years and over from the USK without changes to the original version and allows you to switch between German and English voice output. The German voice actor for Duke is Manfred Lehmann , who is known as the voice actor for Bruce Willis .

continuation
A sequel to the Duke Nukem series has not been officially announced by the brand's current owner, Gearbox Software . However, studio boss Randy Pitchford has mentioned several times that his studio acquired the Duke Nukem license in 2010 not just for fun and charity. Also, according to Pitchford, it would be "a shame to let the Duke go to waste." Furthermore, court documents from a legal dispute between developer 3D Realms and manufacturer Take 2 about the constant postponements of Duke Nukem Forever revealed that Gearbox Software from Take 2 was commissioned to develop a series offshoot with the project title Duke Begins in 2007 . However, this was later discontinued. According to rumors, the development should continue in 2013.
