A urinal is a place intended for men to pee standing up . A urinal can be both a stand-alone building and a section of a toilet . Occasionally are Pinkel Rinne and falsely the urinal as a urinal called.

etymology

The word is of French origin and is made up of the verb pisser ("piss") and the suffix -oir (from Latin -orium - the place where something happens). In French itself, these places were called vespasienne (after the Roman emperor Vespasian ). According to the Petit Larousse Illustré 1994, this term is outdated (page 1062: "VESPASIENNE nf ... Vx ...", page 24: "vx ... vieux (mot qui n'est généralement plus compris ni employé ... ) "). According to Larousse, the standard term is urinoir . The term pissoir also exists, but is called pop. (popular).

When the Prefect Claude-Philibert de Rambuteau had the first public urinals built in Paris in 1834 , the opposition mockingly called them colonne Rambuteau (column of Rambuteau). Rambuteau then launched the official name colonne vespasienne (Vespasian column). There are the terms urinoir and - somewhat less cultivated - pissoir, pissotière . The word épissoir has nothing to do with it, it describes an awl that is used when splicing ( épisser ) ( marlspieker ).
