Hugh Johnson OBE (born March 10, 1939 in London ) is a British wine critic .

Life

Hugh Johnson was born in St. John's Wood , London, to a lawyer. He grew up in London and Kent. Johnson attended boarding school in British rugby and studied English at King's College , Cambridge . He later worked for Vogue , House & Garden magazine and as editor of Wine & Food magazine, where he was the editor of the wine review. He then became editor of The Sunday Times' travel topics . In 1963, Hugh Johnson became general secretary of the Food & Wine Society in London.

Since 1971 he has published the World Atlas of Wine , which has also been available in German translation every year since 1972. Hugh Johnson's books have a total circulation of around 3.5 million (as of 2010) and have been translated into over ten languages. Well-known German-language editions are Der kleine Johnson (new edition annually) and Der große Johnson . The Little Johnson is as printed on the cover of the best-selling wine guide in the world.

Hugh Johnson also has an in-depth knowledge of dendrology and is a writer of books and columns on gardening topics in the field . In 1973 he published The International Book of Trees and in 1975 he became editor of The Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society (The Garden) , for which he published his own columns. A 37 year column, Trad's Diary , appears online in Hortus magazine. In 2010 his internationally successful dendrological handbook on forest and garden trees came out in a revised new version (German trees: The forest and garden trees of the world ).

Hugh Johnson lived with his family near Braintree , Essex for many years before moving back to London in 2013.
