Hugh S. Johnson
Hugh Samuel Johnson (born August 5, 1882 in Fort Scott , Kansas , † April 15, 1942 in Washington, DC ) was an American general and government employee. He was a key player in the New Deal with which the United States, under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, fought the Great Depression .
After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1903, he joined the United States Army as a sub-lieutenant . In 1916 he served under General John Pershing in Mexico . In 1918 he was appointed major general. In 1919 he left the army and became an entrepreneur. In 1933 he was called to Washington to help draft the National Industrial Recovery Act. 1933-1934 he served as the head of the National Recovery Administration . In 1933 he was named Man of the Year by the US news magazine TIME .
