The first German Schlager Competition took place on July 4, 1968, after a one-year break as a follow -up event to the German Schlager Festival . The organizers were the “Association for the Promotion of German Dance and Popular Music”, ZDF and Deutschlandfunk .

procedure

In connection with the German record industry, composers and lyricists were asked to send in new hits. A total of 495 titles were submitted. A jury selected 26 titles. These were presented to the listeners of Deutschlandfunk. An opinion research institute then determined the twelve titles for the final on ZDF. The order of appearance at the final was drawn by lot.

The live broadcast of the final on ZDF from the Philharmonie in Berlin was moderated by Walter Giller . The performers were accompanied by the RIAS dance orchestra under the direction of Dave Hildinger and the Rosy Singers .

After the title was presented, the final result was determined by several juries. On the one hand there were 300 spectators in the hall, six juries each with eight judges from ZDF from different locations in Germany, a jury from Deutschlandfunk with twelve jurors and the results of the opinion research institute.

The allocation of points was chaotic, so that the spectator could not fully understand it. As a result, there was a winner, quasi ex-machina, and with Siw Malmkvist , who sang a song by Hans Blum , won a safe bet. As a single , Renate Kern's title Lieber mal cry im Glück was best sold, even though it was only able to place in the middle of the competition. The piece was represented a total of 21 weeks in the German and 12 weeks in the Austrian hit lists. The winning title, which landed at number 9 on the German hit parade and was one point ahead of Lieber mal cry… , achieved the highest rating .
