German Schlager Festival 1965
The fifth German Schlager Festival took place on June 12, 1965 in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden . As in previous years, the Deutsche Schlager-Festspiele e. V. called on lyricists and composers to submit songs for the event as early as autumn 1964.
By the end of January 1965, over 230 titles were received, from which a 13-member jury selected 24 titles, which were presented to the public on May 23, 1965 at a television preliminary decision of the SFB in the Berlin Deutschlandhalle with the participation of the RIAS from Berlin. The twelve performers, who each performed two titles, were accompanied by the RIAS dance orchestra under the direction of Werner Müller .
The twelve participants in the final selection, who presented themselves to the audience on June 12th in Baden-Baden, were determined by the audience in Berlin and from a representative audience survey carried out by Infratest. The final round was again moderated by Ursula von Manescul and Heidi Abel . The interpreters were accompanied by the SWF orchestra and conducted by Rolf-Hans Müller . The winner was determined by 3 groups. These were the 11 broadcasting companies (including Deutschlandfunk), Infratest and the hall audience.
The event again generated a positive response. Some of the titles were also to be found in the charts and some of them have become evergreens today. Above all , the winning title, composed and written by Heinz Korn , with which Peggy March achieved her breakthrough on the German hit market. The single also gained international fame after Peggy March released the song on record in English and Italian. The runner-up also climbed to number 5 on the charts. Later on, Frank Sinatra also had an international success with the title Sommerwind, although the title presented by Grethe Ingmann was eliminated in the preliminary round.
Despite these successes, the first shadows fell over the festival. The association Deutsche Schlager-Festspiele e. V. were accused of various inconsistencies. This ultimately led to the dissolution of the association on November 29, 1965.
