German Schlager Festival 1966
The sixth German Schlager Festival took place on June 25, 1966 in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden . After the dissolution of the Deutsche Schlager-Festspiele e. V. in November 1965, on January 17/18, 1966, a new sponsoring association, the “Association for the Promotion of German Dance and Popular Music e. V. ”based in Bonn , which at the end of January 1966 called on lyricists and composers to submit songs for the event.
By mid-March 1966, a 15-member jury had selected 18 titles from more than 400 submissions, which were presented to the public on May 21 at a preliminary television decision by the SFB from the large broadcasting hall in Berlin. Karin von Faber conducted the show . The performers were accompanied by the RIAS dance orchestra under the direction of Werner Müller .
The twelve participants in the final selection, who presented themselves to the public on June 25th in Baden-Baden, were determined by the audience in Berlin and from a representative survey of television viewers carried out by Infratest. The final round was moderated by Ursula von Manescul and Karin von Faber. The interpreters were accompanied by the SWF orchestra under the direction of Rolf-Hans Müller . The winner was determined by three groups. These were the eleven broadcasters (including Deutschlandfunk), Infratest and the hall audience.
The event again generated a positive response. Some of the titles were also to be found in the charts and some of them have become evergreens today. Above all the winning title, with which Wencke Myhre achieved her breakthrough on the German hit market. The single was in the charts for weeks. The runner-up also climbed to number 24 on the charts. Roy Black had also hoped for victory, but only achieved 3rd place. His song later appeared as the B-side on the single Put your heart in my hands . All twelve contributions to the 1966 Festival appeared on a long-playing record at the time.
Despite these successes, the festival should be directed by the new Association for the Promotion of German Dance and Popular Music e. V. be the first and at the same time the last, because no Schlager festivals were held in the following year.
In addition to the Schlager Festival in Baden-Baden in 1966, there were also international competitions for the first time, in which German interpreters took part in Rio de Janeiro , Budapest , and Bratislava, as well as a “Young Talent Festival” in Gmunden (Austria). Winner of the 1st International Pop Festival in Rio de Janeiro was Inge Brück entitled Ask the wind . She was able to achieve 5th place at the first Schlager Festival in Baden-Baden in 1961 and took part in the Eurovision Grand Prix for Germany in 1967 . The Austrian contribution from Rio de Janeiro (go by), sung by Udo Jürgens , came fourth.
