Markus Schneider winery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Markus Schneider winery is a German winery in Ellerstadt in the Palatinate wine-growing region .

development

Markus Schneider (* 1975) learned the winemaking trade from 1991 to 1994 at the Dr. Bürklin-Wolf in Wachenheim on the Wine Route . His father Klaus Schneider had already operated viticulture as a grape supplier for the local winegrowers' cooperative and founded his own winery in 1990. In 1994 his son Markus Schneider got on board and, together with his father Klaus Schneider, restructured the business into a self-marketing winery. 1994 was the first vintage whose wines were marketed under its own name.

In 1996 the estate brought out a red wine without a grape variety name, which was only called "red wine" and which attracted the attention of experts. This wine was made from the grapes of the Blauer Portugieser grape variety , some of which were planted in the 1920s. The following vintages of this wine were described by wine critics such as Stuart Pigott , Gerhard Eichelmann and Till Ehrlich as a new type of German red wine.

In the years that followed, the winery increasingly developed wines based on red and white cuvées in addition to classic single-site wines . The mix of grape varieties was new and relied not only on traditional Palatinate grape varieties such as Riesling, but also on international ones such as Sauvignon Blanc , Syrah and Merlot . Marketing relies on non-traditional, modern labels and wine names. Schneider develops wines into brands and thus reaches new, urban wine consumers.

The winery is the leading producer in the Ellerstadt wine-growing community. Schneider does not use vineyard names and predicates , therefore bottles all wines as QbAs . The focus of quality is on the red wine sector.

The winery has a strong media presence. In 2003, Schneider was voted "Newcomer" of the year by the specialist magazine Der Feinschmecker . In 2006 he was named "Discovery of the Year" by the wine guide " Gault Millau WeinGuide Germany" and in 2007 as "Newcomer". Since 2007, the overall performance of the company has been rated 3 out of 5 grapes . In Gerhard Eichelmann's wine guide “Eichelmann. Germany's Wines ”, the winery has been rated since 2000, and since 2006 the operating performance has been classified with 4 out of 5 stars .

Locations, grape varieties

The winery uses its own but also leased vineyards for viticulture. In addition to warm locations in the valley around Ellerstadt, the winery also has locations in higher and cooler regions on the edge of the Haardt Mountains. The cultivated vineyard area of the winery is distributed u. a. on the individual layers "Ellerstadter Kirchenstück" (Ellerstadt) and Nonnengarten ( Bad Dürkheim ).

The 92 hectares of vineyards are divided into the following grape varieties:

White grapes (50%): Riesling , Pinot Blanc , Pinot Gris , Chardonnay , Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier

Red grape varieties (50%): Pinot Noir , Merlot , Blaufränkisch , Syrah , Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc and Blauer Portugieser

Wines

The typical wine styles of the winery are concentrated, aromatic, fruity wines. This is achieved by reducing the yield in the vineyard and harvesting the grapes late, with viticulture focused on the physiological ripe berries. During the aging process , the focus is on the natural must concentration using traditional winemaking methods. This is achieved in rosé and red wine making by extracting the juice using the saignée method of up to 40 percent. In addition, a very slow, classic must fermentation is carried out for red wine , which lasts up to 3 months for premium wines. The maturation traditionally takes place in wooden barrels and barriques . White wines are vinified with long maceration times (up to 48 hours). Maturation takes place on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks, wooden barrels and barriques until immediately before filling in the spring after the harvest.

Well-known wines from the Schneider winery include the red wines Ursprung and Black Print and the white wine Kaitui . The annual production of the company amounts to around 800,000 bottles.
