Live and act

Eichelmann was born the son of part-time winemakers . He studied economics and business administration and politics in Göttingen, Paris and Würzburg and graduated with a degree in economics and business administration . Eichelmann then worked as a management consultant for twelve years .

In 1997 Eichelmann founded Mondo-Verlag in Heidelberg , in which since then the wine magazine Mondo, which he wrote, has been published in pocket book format, initially every two months, later four times a year. The guides, which are ad-free and only available by subscription , reached the 62nd edition at the end of 2011 with the themed issue Champagner, Sekt, Cava, Franciacorta, Crémant & Co.

In 2000 he published the first edition of the book "Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine" (Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine), which describes itself as an independent standard work and is reprinted annually in modified form. The first five editions were published by Graefe and Unzer . Eichelmann , as it is briefly referred to in specialist circles, was also taken over by Mondo-Verlag, Heidelberg, with the 2005 edition.

In this wine guide, Eichelmann describes 935 German wineries - depending on the relevance more or less comprehensively - and evaluates the overall performance of the individual wineries over the past three years. He awards 1 to 5 stars for this, with 5 stars standing for “world class, international top producer”. For the 9772 individual evaluations, Eichelmann tastes thousands of new wines every year, which he evaluates according to the 100-point scheme (as of 2012). According to the company, 27,000 copies of the “Eichelmann 2010” were printed. The Mondo Wine Library has been published by Eichelmann's Mondo-Verlag since 2003 and the Mondo Kompakt paperback series , which addresses individual wine themes , has been published since 2005 .

Eichelmann lives with his wife Jutta and a son in Heidelberg.
