The Freinsheim – Frankenthal railway is a 13.4-kilometer connecting line between the cities of Freinsheim and Frankenthal , which runs via Weisenheim am Sand and Lambsheim . The line, opened in 1877, creates a cross connection between the Mainz – Ludwigshafen line and the Palatinate Northern Railway Neustadt – Monsheim. Due to a shift in traffic flows, the line experienced an upswing in passenger traffic after the Second World War, while freight traffic came to a standstill in the meantime.

history

The fourth of the routes that the Palatinate Northern Railway Company was given as part of the merger of 1870 , the route from Freinsheim to Frankenthal was designed in 1873. With the construction of the line, extensive expansions in the Frankenthal train station became necessary due to the expected freight traffic . New buildings and the branch line to the Frankenthal Canal, which was also built at the same time, were built there. The Palatinate Northern Railway had great difficulty opening the route on October 15, 1877, due to time-consuming processes for acquiring land.

In 1922 the line was incorporated into the newly established Ludwigshafen Reich Railway Directorate . In the course of its dissolution on April 1, 1937, he moved to the area of responsibility of the Mainz management.

The German Federal Railways (DB) divided the route after the Second World War in the Bundesbahndirektion Mainz one, they all railway lines within the newly created state of Rhineland-Palatinate allotted.

On June 1, 1971, the line came under the jurisdiction of its Karlsruhe counterpart in the course of the dissolution of the Mainz management.

With the timetable change on June 14, 2015 at 00:00, the “Frankenthal Süd” stop was put into operation as part of the integration of the Mainz – Ludwigshafen line into the traffic of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn .

course

The route runs completely within the Rhine plain. It starts at Freinsheim train station . In this it branches off almost at right angles from the Palatinate Northern Railway . It then leads through the villages of Weisenheim am Sand , Lambsheim and Flomersheim , before reaching Frankenthal main station via an S-curve .

From Freinsheim to Weisenheim am Sand it is located in the Bad Dürkheim district . Lambsheim is part of the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis . The remaining section is in the independent city of Frankenthal (Pfalz) .

traffic

passenger traffic

The timetable from 1884 showed continuous connections from Freinsheim to Ludwigshafen, as did the one from the beginning of the 20th century. The 1944 timetable contained twelve trains in the direction of Freinsheim and two in the direction of Frankenthal. As early as the 1950s, there were again journeys that ran through to Ludwigshafen. In the 1960s, on Sundays and public holidays in Ludwigshafen, excursion trains to Ramsen on the Eistalbahn and to Altleiningen ran along the route . Until the 1970s, there was a train connection on the Ludwigshafen – Frankenthal – Marnheim route, mainly serving workers, along the Freinsheim – Monsheim section.

For reasons of circulation, the trains on the line were tied in a westerly direction to Grünstadt from the 1980s . Today it is part of the course book route 666 ( Eiswoog  -) Ramsen  - Grünstadt  - Freinsheim  - Frankenthal Hbf, mostly used every hour.

In Freinsheim there is a connection to the regional trains in the direction of Neustadt (Weinstrasse) , in Frankenthal to the regional express trains to Mainz and Karlsruhe and to the S-Bahn trains in the direction of Mannheim (via Ludwigshafen ) and Mainz (via Worms ).

Freight transport

At the beginning of the 20th century, freight trains ran on the Ludwigshafen - Grünstadt - Eisenberg  - Hettenleidelheim route .

Vehicle use

At the beginning of the 20th century, locomotives of the P 2.II and P 5 types were used for passenger traffic, while the G 2.I and G 2.II were responsible for freight traffic. For passenger were from the late 1980s railcars of the 628 series in charge. Class 622 and 623 railcars have been in service since the end of 2015 .
