As a member of the German Society for Milling Customer and Mill Maintenance (DGM) , Niederhöfer campaigned primarily for the continuation of the 23 mills on Eckbach in the Leiningerland that were still completely or partially preserved .

In years of negotiations with the municipalities of Grünstadt-Land and Hettenleidelheim , which merged in 2018 to form the new municipality of Leiningerland , he succeeded in setting up the Eckbach-Mühlenwanderweg and inaugurating it on October 12, 1997 by the then Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate, Kurt Beck . Niederhöfer regularly organized guided tours on the hiking trail into old age. On these occasions he gladly recited the full poem of the dialect poet Albert H. Keil from the 1997 inauguration.

The logo of the hiking trail consists of a stylized building typified by the silhouette of a mill wheel ; the wavy line below symbolizes the Eckbach. The logo that identifies the wooden, hand-made information signs comes from a school competition. Niederhöfer initiated this in 1996, and the motif was designed by Cosmas Kösters from Kirchheim . Niederhöfer recorded the history of the Eckbach mills in a 50-page manual.

Almost ten years after the creation of the hiking trail, on June 22, 2007, the village mill in Großkarlbach, restored on Niederhöfer's initiative, was opened by the then Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister Karl Peter Bruch and put into operation as the Leiningerland mill museum . In part of the building, rooms for the municipal administration and a meeting room were also set up.

politics

Niederhöfer became a member of the SPD at an early age and was chairman of the local SPD association in Kleinkarlbach from 1972 to 1987. He represented his party as an elected councilor for years in his place of residence and from 1974 to 1994 also in the community of Grünstadt-Land.

Within the party, Niederhöfer became known up to the state level through his involvement in the working group 60 plus of the SPD . When he retired from his offices in the AG in 2011 at the age of 79 due to illness, this affected his functions as its chairman in the SPD sub-district Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , as deputy chairman in the regional association of the Palatinate and as a board member in the state association of Rhineland-Palatinate, the he had also co-founded.

Outside of the party work, Niederhöfer was one of the founding fathers of the Grünstadt-Land e. V. and in the first few years acted as 2nd chairman and as a contact for politics and the media. In the months before his death, Leiningerland e. Was also involved in the preparatory work for the expansion of the association . V. to the new community. The periodical “Spätlese” published by the association since December 1997, a newspaper by seniors for seniors, is largely due to his instigation.
