Karl Peter Bruch (born July 17, 1946 in Nastätten ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2005 to 2011 he was Interior Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate and from November 2006 also Deputy Prime Minister of the state. He is married and has two children.

Occupation and political career

Bruch completed a police officer training after secondary school. From 1964 to 1987 he worked as a police officer and achieved the rank of chief detective in Lahnstein and Koblenz.

From July 1979 to June 2001 Bruch was the honorary mayor of his hometown Nastätten . From May 27, 1987 to May 18, 2001 he was a member of the State Parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate ; Since May 22, 1991, he has been the parliamentary director of the SPD parliamentary group.

On May 18, 2001 Bruch was appointed State Secretary to the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Interior and Sports. On February 25, 2005, he replaced Interior Minister Walter Zuber , who had resigned for health reasons ( Beck III cabinet ). When the SPD sole government was formed after the state elections in 2006, he was confirmed in office ( Beck IV cabinet ). In 2011, Bruch left office.

As the successor to Ehrhart Körting, he was, along with three other people, a member of the federal-state commission on right-wing terrorism , which was set up as a result of the exposure of the National Socialist underground .

"Son-in-law affair"

In October 2007, the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU demanded Bruch's resignation from office as state interior minister because of the "son-in-law affair". The Minister had earlier in the year the contract for a corporate video of the country without tender awarded to a company from Mainz, whose co-owner Marcus Stiehl in summer 2007 break-law was. The film "Learn to Fly" by Roberto Formica and Marcus Stiehl was nominated for the 40th German Business Film Award and on November 23, 2007 was awarded the special prize for the best film of the entire competition , which was endowed with 10,000 euros.

One year later, on October 23, 2008, the Koblenz Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed on Südwestrundfunk (SWR) that a criminal complaint for breach of trust had been filed against Bruch in this matter . However, the opening of a preliminary investigation was refused.

"Castle Hotel Affair"

In the so-called castle hotel affair, Bruch was accused of illegally funding the renovation of the castle hotel in Bad Bergzabern , the birthplace of the Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Kurt Beck , with a grant amounting to 90 percent of the costs. In this context, it was also criticized that the originally estimated costs more than doubled from 3.7 million euros to 8.4 million euros, while the leaseholder of the business, a party friend of Beck and Bruch, was contractually guaranteed the hotel ten years for 1.4 million euros.

The opposition in the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament called for Bruch's resignation several times in 2010 and 2011 because of the castle hotel affair.

Social Commitment

In addition to his political activities, Karl Peter Bruch is also socio-politically active in a variety of ways. Since June 2010 he has been Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Youth Hostels in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. In August 2011 he succeeded Hans-Artur Bauckhage as President of the Disabled and Rehabilitation Sports Association of Rhineland-Palatinate, which is one of the 17 regional associations of the DBS ( German Disabled Sports Association ). In November of the same year, Bruch was elected chairman of the general assembly of Diakonie Hessen-Nassau for a three-year term.
