August Wolters

August Wolters (born March 2, 1903 in Krefeld , † April 13, 1990 in Trier ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

Wolters was born the son of a master baker. After attending elementary school, he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and then worked for the Deutsche Reichsbahn . He was already involved in the union during his apprenticeship and had been a member of the Christian woodworkers' association since 1920. With the help of a scholarship from the city of Krefeld, he attended the technical college for business and administration in Düsseldorf in 1927/28 . He then worked as a union secretary at the German railway workers' union in Cologne and Koblenz before moving to Trier in the same position in 1930.

After the National Socialists came to power and the unions were brought into line, Wolters was dismissed from all offices. He then switched to the private sector as a commercial clerk and worked as a personnel office manager at a large construction and machine company. After the Second World War he took part in the development of social security in the Trier administrative district . In 1946 he took over the management of the AOK in Trier, which he held until 1959.

Political party

Wolters was a member of the Center Party during the Weimar Republic . After 1945 he was one of the co-founders of the CDU in Trier and at the state level.

MP

Wolters was a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament from 1947 to 1971 . From 1948 to 1959 he was President of the State Parliament.

Public offices

In 1945/46 Woltes was first deputy to the office of Konz . On May 19, 1959, he was appointed Minister of the Interior and Social Affairs to succeed Otto van Volxem in the government of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate led by Prime Minister Peter Altmeier and, since 1969, has also been a member of the follow-up government led by Prime Minister Helmut Kohl . During his tenure, the health system was expanded, the police modernized and electronic data processing was introduced in the state administration. On May 18, 1971, he left the government and was replaced as Interior Minister by Heinz Schwarz .
