Joachim Mertes (born April 18, 1949 in Trier ; † October 23, 2017 in Buch ) was a German politician ( SPD ) and president of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament from 2006 to 2016 .

Education, work and family

From 1963 to 1966 Mertes completed an apprenticeship as a baker, which he completed with the journeyman's examination. From 1967 to 1975 he was a soldier in the German Armed Forces , most recently as Hauptfeldwebel d. R. Since 1975 Mertes has worked in various offices as a professional politician.

Mertes had been a member of the SPD since 1969. In 1975 he became the SPD sub-district manager for Rhein-Hunsrück. From 1978 to 1983 he was regional manager of the SPD Rhineland-Palatinate, from 1985 to 1994 finally district manager of the SPD Rhineland / Hessen-Nassau.

Since 1974 Mertes was a member of the district council of the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis . From 1989 to 2014 he was also the local mayor of Buch. Mertes was elected as a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament as early as 1983. In 1994 he took over the chairmanship of the SPD parliamentary group as the successor to Kurt Beck . With the constitution of the new state parliament on May 18, 2006, Jochen Hartloff took over the chairmanship of the SPD parliamentary group. Mertes was elected President of the State Parliament and remained so until he left the State Parliament at the end of the 16th legislative period in May 2016.

Mertes succumbed to severe cancer in October 2017 at the age of 68 .
