Alexander Roger Schweitzer (born September 17, 1973 in Landau in der Pfalz ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament . He has been a member of the SPD party executive since December 8, 2017 .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in Bad Bergzabern in 1993 , Schweitzer studied law at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . After the state examination in 2001, he worked for an agency in the state of Baden-Württemberg. In 2005 he became a project manager at the Steinbeis Transfer Center in Heidelberg and a lecturer at the Mosbach University of Cooperative Education .

In 1989 Schweitzer joined the SPD. From 1993 to 1995 he was deputy state chairman of the Jusos and from 1995 to 1997 chairman of the Jusos in the Palatinate district. In 1995 he was also elected to the board of the SPD district Palatinate, of which he was a member until 2013. From 1997 to 2004 he was chairman of the SPD Billigheim-Ingenheim and from 2002 to 2005 of Landau-Land. In 2002 he was elected to the state executive committee of the SPD Rhineland-Palatinate and is one of the three deputy chairmen there. In 2004 he became a member of the State Presidium and Chairman of the Southern Wine Route District Association.

In 1999 Schweitzer was elected to the district assembly of the southern Weinstrasse district and to the municipal council of the Landau-Land community , where he became chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in 2007. From June 2006 to July 2009 he was a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament .

Then Schweitzer was State Secretary in the Ministry of Economics, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture in Rhineland-Palatinate . He succeeded Carsten Kühl , who became Minister of Finance. After the state elections in 2011 , Schweitzer became the new general secretary of the Rhineland-Palatinate SPD, succeeding Heike Raab , who moved to the newly created Ministry of the Interior, Sports and Infrastructure as State Secretary. Schweitzer was Minister for Social Affairs in Malu Dreyer's cabinet from January 16, 2013 to November 12, 2014 . He has been chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament since November 12, 2014.

On December 8, 2017, he was elected as a member of the SPD party executive committee at the federal party conference.
