Karl Thorwirth

Karl Thorwirth (born August 23, 1923 in Pirmasens ; † September 16, 2003 in Mainz ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ).

Life

After attending school, Thorwirth took part in the Second World War as a soldier . He was most recently taken prisoner of war, from which he was released in 1945.

After his release from captivity, Thorwirth joined the ÖTV . He became a member of the DGB in 1946 and had worked full-time for the trade union in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse since 1951 . From 1952 he worked for the DGB regional district of Rhineland-Palatinate , which he headed from 1960 to 1965 as chairman. From 1972 he was a board member of Stadtwerke Mainz AG.

Thorwirth joined the SPD and has been involved in local politics since 1960. He was a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament from 1963 to 1983, where he was parliamentary manager from 1965 to 1972 and from January 1, 1976 to 1979 chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. He was also chairman of the cultural policy committee.
