The state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate in 1963 took place on March 31st. The CDU lost its absolute majority and the previously voluntary coalition with the FDP was continued. The SPD became the only opposition party in the state parliament because the DRP no longer made it into the state parliament.
Starting position
Despite an absolute majority in the CDU, Prime Minister Peter Altmeier had entered into a black-yellow coalition with the FDP. Opposition parties in parliament were the SPD and DRP.
