The state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate in 1987 took place on May 17th. The previous sole governing CDU of Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel lost its absolute majority and then had to form a coalition with that of Rainer Brüderle guided FDP received that managed to back into parliament after the first time at in the last election five percent threshold was failed . Rudolf Scharping ran for the first time as the top candidate for the SPD . The Greens entered the state parliament for the first time. The Rhineland-Palatinate Free Voting Group , which was running for the first time, achieved the highest percentage of votes of all other parties with 1.46%.

Starting position

The 1983 state election took place together with the federal election on March 6, 1983. The CDU received 51.9 percent of the vote, the SPD 39.6%; all other parties failed at the 5 percent hurdle. Bernhard Vogel , Prime Minister since December 1976, formed the Vogel III cabinet . Like Cabinets I and II, this consisted exclusively of CDU ministers.
