State election in Rhineland-Palatinate 1975
The state election in Rhineland-Palatinate in 1975 took place on March 9th. The winner of the election was the CDU led by Prime Minister Helmut Kohl , which was able to expand its absolute majority and achieved the historically best result of a party in Rhineland-Palatinate to date.
As in 1971, the SPD with its top candidate Wilhelm Dröscher did not receive enough votes to replace Helmut Kohl as Prime Minister. The FDP Rhineland-Palatinate also suffered a slight loss of votes.
After the election, Kohl formed his third cabinet .
Starting position
A sole government of the CDU ( Kohl II cabinet ) faced the SPD and FDP as opposition parties in parliament. Prime Minister was Helmut Kohl . Kohl resigned in December 1976, a year after the election, and switched to federal politics. Bernhard Vogel , then chairman of the CDU Rhineland-Palatinate, became his successor.
