Moneygall ( Irish Muine Gall ) is a place in the southern tip of County Offaly in the heart of the Republic of Ireland . The southern tip of County Offaly protrudes far into County Tipperary and that is why the neighboring towns of Moneygall are mostly in Tipperary. The place is one of the common street villages in Ireland (ir. Sráidbhaile ). In 2006 the place had around 300 inhabitants.

Transport links and facilities

Moneygall is on the old N7 (now R445) between Roscrea and Nenagh , but there is a direct connection to the M7 motorway from Dublin to Limerick via junction 23 , which at the same time relieves the town of through traffic.

The main bus route from Limerick to Dublin ( Bus Éireann route 12) runs through the town . The nearest Irish railroad stations ( Iarnród Éireann ) are in Roscrea , Cloughjordan and Nenagh respectively . The place has the usual facilities such as a Catholic church and a school, a few shops, a post office, a police station ( Garda Síochána ) and two pubs.

Personalities

Fulmuth Kearney was born in Moneygall in the 19th century as the son of a shoemaker and , like many other family members, immigrated to North America after the devastating famine (Great Famine) in the middle of the century. His great-great-great-grandson is former US President Barack Obama . On May 23, 2011, the US President made a brief visit to Moneygall.
