The director of the British Museum ( Director of the British Museum ), the director of the British Museum in London .
The current director is the German art historian Hartwig Fischer (as of 2016). He is responsible for general and financial administration for which he is accountable to the UK Government. The British Museum employs over 1,000 people (as of 2011).
However, the actual control of the British Museum is entrusted to its Board of Trustees , of which Niall FitzGerald has been chairman since March 23, 2010 .
In founding the museum the highest office with "Principal Librarian" (Chief Librarian was or librarian) referred, in 1898 it was changed to "Director and Principal Librarian" (Director and Chief Librarian) and 1973 on the occasion of separation from the British Museum and the newly established National Library , the British Library , renamed “Director”.
