Hartwig Fischer (2016)

Hartwig Fischer (born December 14, 1962 in Hamburg ) is a German art historian . He was director of the Museum Folkwang, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and has been director of the British Museum in London since 2016 .

Life

Fischer studied art history , history and classical archeology in Bonn, Paris, Rome and Berlin and was on the 1993 Bonn University with a dissertation on the Dresden painter Hermann Prell and Wilhelmine reorganization of Palazzo Caffarelli doctorate . He then worked at the Kunstmuseum Bonn and from 1993 to 2000 worked as a research assistant and assistant to the management at the Kunstmuseum Basel . In 2001 he followed the activity as a conservator for the 19th century and Classical Modernism (1800–1960). During this time he curated a. a. the exhibitions Schwitters Arp (2004), Covering the Real (2005) and Kandinsky (2006/2007, with Bernhard Mendes Bürgi ). From 2006 Fischer held the position of director at the Museum Folkwang in Essen . Under his leadership, the collection grew through significant purchases and donations; the new museum building by the architect David Chipperfield also fell during his tenure .

In December 2011, Fischer was appointed General Director of the Dresden State Art Collections as successor to Martin Roth . He has been familiar with the city since he was a child, he often visited relatives there, later he researched here for his dissertation and dealt with the history of art in Saxony. Fischer took office on May 1, 2012.

On April 1, 2016, Fischer succeeded Neil MacGregor as Director of the British Museum .

In his role as director of the British Museum, Fischer supported the position that the Greek Parthenon frieze was rightly exhibited there. Fischer's argument was that the removal of the marble frieze was a “creative act” that justified the exhibition in London in a new, non-original setting. This position has been criticized by the Greek government.
