Otto Schmidt (born May 27, 1899 in Großseifen , † December 11, 1969 in Koblenz ) was a German administrative officer and politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

Schmidt was initially a quarry worker and later switched to the profession of miner, which he worked until 1921. He was a union member and worked from 1921 to 1930 as a union secretary for the Miners' Association . He then worked as a political editor for a social democratic newspaper in Upper Silesia . After the National Socialists came to power, he was briefly imprisoned and banned from working in 1933. In the following years he worked as a self-employed farmer in the Westerwald .

After the Second World War , Schmidt embarked on a civil service career, worked in the labor administration from 1945 to 1947 and then served as a senior civil servant in the Rhineland-Palatinate state government. He was put on hold in 1951 and retired in 1962.

Political party

Schmidt joined the SPD in 1919. From 1947 to 1963 he was chairman of the SPD district of Rhineland / Hessen-Nassau.

MP

Schmidt was a member of the Advisory State Assembly of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1946/47 . In 1947 he was elected to the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament, to which he belonged until his death. From 1949 to 1959 he was first deputy chairman and then until 1967 chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

Public offices

After his appointment as ministerial director in 1947, Schmidt held several positions in the government of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. From August 1947 to April 1948 he was permanent representative of the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry and from April 1948 to December 1949 State Secretary in the Ministry of Reconstruction. From December 1949 to May 1951 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior and Economy.
