Matthias Hey (born February 16, 1970 in Erfurt ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He has been a member of the Thuringian state parliament since 2009 and has been chairman of the SPD parliamentary group there since 2014.

Life

Matthias Hey, son of an economist and a saleswoman, grew up in Gotha . After completing the 10th grade at the “Friedrich Engels” polytechnic high school , he completed his training as a skilled worker for offset printing in Pößneck and Erfurt . From 1988 to 1991 he worked in this profession at the August Bebel Gotha printing company .

After a short period of unemployment, Hey began studying at the training center of the Thuringian Tax Administration in Gotha. In 1994 he graduated as a tax specialist . Until 2006 he worked as a tax officer at the Gotha tax office.

Hey is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church , lives in a community and is the father of two children.

Political career

Local political engagement

For the local elections in the GDR in 1989 , Hey ran for the Gotha City Council on the list of the FDGB and was also elected to this body as one of the youngest city councilors. He did not run for the following local elections in May 1990, but in the meantime was involved in the Democratic Awakening from November 1989 , from February 1990 with the United Left and finally joined the Jusos in 1992 . From 1994 he was chairman of the Juso district association Gotha.

In 1996 he became a member of the SPD. In 2001 he entered the Gotha City Council as a candidate for the SPD in the local elections, and from 2005 he was chairman of the SPD's city council group.

In 2006 he was elected by the Gotha City Council as an alderman for the city of Gotha with responsibility for finance, social affairs and order.

Hey has been chairman of the SPD local association in Gotha since 2009.

State politics

In the state elections in Thuringia in 2009 , he won one of two direct mandates for his party in the Gotha II constituency with a share of 40.6% of the vote (alongside state chairman Christoph Matschie). In the Thuringian state parliament , Matthias Hey was chairman of the interior committee and a member of the finance and budget committee. Within the SPD parliamentary group, Hey was the spokesman for local politics, a member of the budget, finance, justice, federal and European affairs working group as well as the internal, local and building working group.

On December 18, 2013 Hey succeeded David-Christian Eckardt as deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

After the state elections in Thuringia in 2014 , in which he successfully defended his constituency and was now the only directly elected SPD member, he became the successor of Dr. Werner Pidde elected chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

For the election of the 7th Thuringian State Parliament on October 27, 2019, Hey defended the direct mandate in the Gotha II constituency again with 38.2% of the votes and gained almost 1,000 votes compared to his 2014 election. He is still the only directly elected member of his party in the Free State of Thuringia and was re-elected chairman after his parliamentary group was constituted.

Volunteering

Hey is a member of numerous clubs, initiatives and associations in his hometown.

1990 was one of the founding members of the Gotha Theater Association , today art der stadt eV and in 1998 one of the founding members of the KommPottPora Association for Socio-Cultural and International Cooperation eV He is an honorary member of the VdK district association Gotha and the Freundeskreis Kunstsammlungen Schloss Friedenstein Gotha eV

Hey is the spokesman for the Gotha Initiative against Forgetting , the Gotha Alliance helps! and the citizens' initiative Save the Seeberg! . He is also an honorary member of the advisory board of FSV Wacker 03 Gotha and a certified tour guide of the residential city of Gotha.

Honors

Matthias Hey was honored with the Christian August Vulpius Prize by the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation in 2018 for his commitment, in particular to the cultural and historical heritage of the city of Gotha . The award is the foundation's patronage award .

Political work and positions

In addition to the general political priorities of his party and his parliamentary group, Hey is particularly committed to the interests of his constituency. He is committed u. a. in the Thuringian state parliament also to reopen the Gotha – Gräfenroda railway , the so-called Ohratalbahn, which was closed in 2011 .

In his work as a member of the Thuringian State Parliament, he successfully campaigned against the closure of several educational institutions in the city of Gotha, for example for the Gotha Administrative College, the Gotha State Technical School and the Gotha Education Center of the Thuringian Tax Administration.

Inside the party, Hey is counted to the left wing of the SPD, also in his capacity as chairman of his parliamentary group he publicly acknowledged himself several times as an opponent of the grand coalition in the Bundestag .
