The United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa ( USAFE-AFAFRICA ; German  Air Forces of the United States in Europe - Air Forces Africa ) form, alongside the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF), one of two regionally oriented of the ten main commands of the United States Air Force (USAF) . USAFE-AFAFRICA is also the airspace component of the United States European Command (EUCOM) and NATO Association and of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM). The headquarters are at Ramstein Air Base in Germany . General Jeffrey L. Harrigian has been in command since May 1, 2019 .

The United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa is responsible for the planning, implementation and support of air force operations in Europe and Africa and has five main bases: RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Great Britain, Ramstein AB and Spangdahlem AB in Germany and Aviano AB in Italy. There are also 80 other facilities, including Morón (Spain), Incirlik (Turkey), RAF Alconbury and RAF Fairford (Great Britain) and Chiévres (Belgium). The USAFE is subordinate to the Third Air Force with ten squadrons .

In 2018 USAFE-AFAFRICA had around 23,805 people and around 200 aircraft.

history

The oldest direct predecessor organization of the USAFE is the 8th Air Force , established in January 1942 , which was absorbed into the United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe on February 22, 1944 . On August 7, 1945, the name was finally changed to United States Air Forces in Europe .

On April 20, 2012, following the inactivation of the 17th US Air Force of the United States Air Forces Africa (AFAFRICA), the name was changed from United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) to United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa (USAFE- AFAFRICA) and an expansion of the area of ​​responsibility.
