The Air Force Global Strike Command ( AFGSC ; German Air Force Command for Worldwide Strike ) is a main command of the United States Air Force (USAF), with headquarters at Barksdale Air Force Base , Louisiana , USA . It is responsible for the part of the US nuclear forces organized within the framework of the US Air Force . In the target structure, the workforce is 23,000.

history

The command was set up on August 7, 2009 at Barksdale AFB. It assumed responsibility for the nuclear resources of the Air Force Space Command on December 1, 2009 and that of the Air Combat Command on February 1, 2010. On October 1, 2010, the command declared its full operational capability.

The Air Force Global Strike Command's mission is to "develop and deploy combat-ready armed forces for nuclear deterrence and global air strike operations in support of the President of the United States and military commanders."

organization

A total of five air bases are under direct control of the AFGSC, three each as a barracks of ICBMs and as a home-based long-range bombers . The three missile squadrons are combined within the command to form the Twentieth Air Force and the three bomber squadrons form the Eighth Air Force :

In addition, the 576th Flight Test Squadron , a Minuteman test squadron based at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California , reports directly to the AFGSC.
