Since 1917 there was an Equipment Division of the US Army Signal Corps responsible for equipment . After the First World War , independent units were created for research and development on the one hand and logistics on the other, but they were merged again in the late 1940s to form the Air Materiel Command . As early as 1950, the USAF spun off the Air Research and Development Command , which was responsible for research and development, and reorganized it on April 1, 1961 as Air Force Systems Command . At the same time, the Air Materiel Command became the Air Force Logistics Command . These two commands finally merged on July 1, 1992 to form today's Air Force Materiel Command .
