Janet C. Wolfenbarger
Janet Carol Wolfenbarger (born 1958 in Beavercreek , Ohio ) is a former general in the United States Air Force (USAF). From June 5, 2012 to June 8, 2015, she was in command of Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), a major USAF command based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base , Ohio.
Wolfenbarger is the first woman to hold the rank of general in the US Air Force and the second female general in the United States Armed Forces after Ann Dunwoody , who headed the US Army Materiel Command from 2008 to 2012 .
Education and career
Wolfenbarger graduated from the United States Air Force Academy , Colorado , with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in 1980 , and then went on to serve as an intelligence analyst at Eglin Air Force Base , Florida .
Wolfenbarger's further education includes Masters degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1985) and in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University (1994). Janet Wolfenbarger is married to Craig Wolfenbarger.
Service in the rank of general
Between August 2005 and July 2006, Wolfenbarger served as Director Air Force Acquisition Center of Excellence in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition at the Pentagon, and in that capacity was promoted to Brigadier General on February 1, 2006 . This was followed by a position as Special Assistant for Command Transformation to the Commander at the AFMC headquarters at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, from January 2007 on with additional responsibility for the Intelligence and Requirements Directorate . From July 2008 she headed this department as director for a good one and a half years, and from June 2009 onwards with the rank of major general .
Half a year later, in December 2009, she was promoted to lieutenant general and appointed deputy commander of the AFMC; she held this post until September 2011 and was then transferred again to the Pentagon as Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition for nine months .
On February 6, 2012, US President Barack Obama nominated Wolfenbarger to succeed Donald J. Hoffman as AFMC Commander. The Senate confirmed the nomination on March 26th, Wolfenbarger finally took command on June 5th of the same year; their promotion to general took place as part of the transfer of command.
On June 8, 2015 Wolfenbarger handed over the command of the AFMC to General Ellen M. Pawlikowski and took effect on 1 July of that year in retirement .
