Ann E. Dunwoody (born 1953 in Fort Belvoir , Virginia ) is a former general in the US Army . From November 14, 2008 to June 28, 2012, she served as the commanding general of the US Army Materiel Command ; she was the first woman in the history of the US armed forces to hold the rank of general.

Life

Ann Dunwoody was born to Elizabeth and Harold H. Dunwoody. Since her father was an officer in the US Army , she lived with her family in Belgium and Germany, among other places. She graduated from SHAPE American High School in 1969 .

After graduating from the State University of New York at Cortland as a physical education teacher in 1975, she joined the Women's Army Corps as a second lieutenant . She first served as a platoon leader in the 226th Maintenance Company , 100th Supply and Services Battalion in Fort Sill , Oklahoma . During her over thirty years of service as an officer in the Quartermaster Corps of the US Army, she commanded, among other things, the 226th Maintenance Company at Fort Sill; the 5th Quartermaster Detachment (Airborne) in Kaiserslautern ; the 407th Supply and Service Battalion / 782d Main Support Battalion (MSB) at Fort Bragg , North Carolina ; the 10th Mountain Division Support Command (DISCOM) at Fort Drum , New York ; the 1st Corps Support Command (1st COSCOM) at Fort Bragg; the Military Traffic Management Command (MTMC) / Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) in Alexandria , Virginia ; and the Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM) in Fort Lee , Virginia.

Her most important staff positions included paratrooper officer of the 82nd Airborne Division , strategic planner for the Chief of Staff of the Army (CSA), Executive Officer for the Director of the Defense Logistics Agency and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army, responsible for logistics (G-4).

From May 1989 to May 1991, Dunwoody served as an executive officer and later as a division paratrooper officer for the 407th Supply and Transportation Battalion , the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. She was moved to Saudi Arabia and took part in Operation Desert Shield / Operation Desert Storm . As commander of the 1st Corps Support Command , she moved to Uzbekistan in 2001 with the Logistics Task Force to support Operation Enduring Freedom .

In 1988, she earned a Master of Science degree in Logistics Management from the Florida Institute of Technology . In addition, she received a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1995 .

Dunwoody is married to retired Air Force Colonel Craig Brotchie.
