Gustave F. Perna  (born April 5, 1960 ) is a general in the United States Army and since September 30, 2016, as Commander of the United States Army Materiel Command, Commander of a so-called Major Command of the US Armed Forces . On May 15, 2020, President Trump announced that Perna and Moncef Slaoui would lead US efforts to develop and deliver a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 .

Perna completed his basic military training at the Valley Forge Military Academy , where he graduated in business administration . He then worked as a lieutenant and infantryman and also earned a bachelor's degree in his field of study from the University of Maryland and a master's in logistics management from the Florida Institute of Technology .

After that he was mostly deployed in the replenishment area (G4 / J4), including as a replenishment officer in Somalia and Bosnia . Further assignments led him to the Defense Logistics Agency and as Director of Logistics, J4 in action in Iraq , where he was responsible for supplying the US and allied forces. Between his current assignment he was temporarily Commander, Joint Munitions Command , a command that for the management of ammunition worth more than 40 billion US dollars is responsible, as well as Commander, Defense Supply Center Philadelphia , with a volume of 14.5 Billion US dollars to ensure the supply of food, medicine and clothing to the US armed forces worldwide.

General Perna is married and has two children.
