The Francis E. Warren Air Force Base is a base of the US Air Force in Cheyenne , Wyoming .

The Army had operated a fort from 1867 onwards at this unsettled location on the First Transcontinental Railroad , which was under construction . It was just outside of the Cheyenne railroad town emerging from the local station . Roughly speaking, it was only a few hundred miles farther from New York than from Los Angeles and halfway between Canada and Mexico . This Fort DA Russell was renamed Fort Francis E. Warren in 1929/1930 . After the transfer to the Air Force in 1949, training was carried out there. In 1958 the base became part of the Strike Command and became the first basis for intercontinental missiles the headquarters of Atlas -Interkontinentalraketentruppen the Air Force. From May 1964 to March 1965, the Atlas D and E missiles were retired. From 1963 four squadrons of the 90th Strategic Missile Wing were stationed on the base , which were fully equipped with nuclear ICBMs of the Minuteman I type until July 1, 1964 . The first version of this missile type was replaced by today's successor versions by September 1974. By 1988, an additional 50 LGM-118 Peacekeeper missiles were installed. These missiles were disarmed by 2005 as part of the START II agreement.

Around 3000 people live on the base. It is named after Francis E. Warren , a Wyoming politician and father-in-law of John J. Pershing .
