Menwith Hill is a Royal Air Force base near Harrogate , North Yorkshire . The 421st Air Base Squadron is stationed on the site and is supported by the 501st Combat Support Wing of the United States Air Forces in Europe .

It's important to US intelligence.

According to British investigative journalist and surveillance expert Duncan Campbell , this location is part of the ECHELON network.

The 709th Military Intelligence Battalion as part of the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade of the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command is stationed here. Prior to October 16, 2009, the unit's name was the 109th Military Intelligence Group .

The National Security Agency has been responsible for the operation of the US portion of the facility since 1966 . Some of the staff at the Bad Aibling station , which has now been closed , has been relocated here.
