Lambertskreuz is the name of a square and wayside cross on a mountain saddle in the Palatinate Forest , approx. 4 km north of Lambrecht and 1 km south of the Drachenfels . The old crossroads at an altitude of 467 m was named after a medieval stone cross that bears its name after St. Lambertus , formerly Bishop of Maastricht , who was murdered around 705. The first documented mention of the cross comes from the year 1280. This makes the Lambert Cross the oldest preserved stone cross in the Palatinate .
Lambertskreuzhütte
In 1905 members of the Lambrecht local group of the Palatinate Forest Association dug out the broken stone cross, put the parts back together and put it back on the old square. In the following years the local group built an accommodation hut at the site. The wooden hut was inaugurated in 1907 and, according to the inscription at the entrance, is the association's oldest hiking hut.
The Lambertskreuzhütte developed into a popular hiking destination in the following decades and was expanded and rebuilt several times. There is no public road leading to today's Waldhaus Lambertskreuz , but it can be reached via numerous hiking trails . The most comfortable route, known as the “Pensioner Rennweg”, is around 5 km long and begins at the Rotsteig Forestry House near the Kurpfalz Park .
