The Dürkheimer Haus is a listed building in the spa and district town of Bad Dürkheim ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). The two-wing structure, which was in operation as an inn for over 200 years, is located in front of the former Hardenburger Tor, outside the then fortified city center.

history

From the foundation to the end of the 19th century

The building originally housed an inn called “Zum Schaaf”, which Johann Conrad Schaaf ran until his death in 1755. He was followed in 1764 by Johann Christoffel Haas and his wife Anna Maria. They called their restaurant "Host to the Schaaf". In 1766 a Wilhelm Borner became the new owner of the property, who was succeeded in 1776 by Johann Wilhelm Ritter as landlord "zum Schaaf". In 1787, his name and the building were named in the warehouse register with “Wirtschaft zum Schaf vor dem Hardenburger Tor”. Martin Haas was the owner of the property from 1817 to 1832, followed by Karl Becker the next year. Adam Zott acquired the property from the Becker couple on September 20, 1833 for around 12,000 guilders. Zott named the inn "Gasthaus zur Post" after his work as a postman. Since the postal expedition disrupted the operation of the restaurant, Zott passed letters and traveling mail to the Gasthaus zum Ochsen in September 1840.

A number of owners followed. The innkeeper Johann Balthasar Bergner acquired the restaurant by notarial deed of March 29, 1835; Bergner was once the host of the ox. His second wife, Anna geb. Marx from Trier, will go down in Dürkheim's history. The building was completely rebuilt by Bergner (the previous appearance of the building is not known) and gave the restaurant the name "At the Four Seasons". On September 4, 1836, the landlord invited the guests to a large meal with a ball for the formal opening of the newly built inn. The hall was built in 1847/1848 and was demolished again around 1886. Anna Bergner outlived her husband by almost 28 years. In works such as "Träume und Schäum vom Rhein", 1838 by Friedrich Blaul, or "From my youth - a chat from an old Derkemer" by Esslinger, "Schöne Anna" was mentioned. According to a quote in the “Wochenblatt” in 1843, she “made our bathing town a rendezvous for the educated world”. The guests in the "Four Seasons" included kings and princes, for example the Bavarian kings Ludwig I , Max II and the later Empress Augusta , as well as the author of " Struwwelpeter ", Heinrich Hoffmann . POLLICHIA was founded in the restaurant on October 6, 1840, an association for nature research, nature conservation and environmental education that still exists today.

The "Four Seasons" were auctioned in 1855 and the new owner was Friedrich Arnz. From 1857 to 1873 Karl Philipp Seel followed as owner and from 1873 to 1883 the pensioner and innkeeper Albert Graf. He bought the inn for around 47,000 guilders from the Seel heirs. Hotelier Karl Cron bought the "Four Seasons" from Count's widow in 1883 for around 75,000 Mk. He could only hold her for two years; after the foreclosure auction on July 20, 1885, they were returned to the widow Graf. In 1886 the Mannheim manufacturer Werner bought the property for 55,000 Mk. He in turn sold the “Four Seasons” according to the file of February 16, 1891 for around 50,000 Mk to the AG “Gasthof zu den vier Jahreszeiten”. The inn was completely renovated by the AG and led to a new bloom.

20th century

With a certificate dated March 15, 1902, after eleven years, the winegrowers' cooperative took over the land from AG Vier Jahreszeiten for 75,000 Mk. The cooperative was founded on January 10, 1902 and was called the "Haardtwein-Genossenschaft". From 1903 it was called the "Four Seasons Wine Cooperative". In 1902, construction work began on a winery with a wine press house in the garden and wingert area to the rear . On May 22, 1903, the garden restaurant was opened in the "Four Seasons". The actual restaurant, it is said, consisted of a very large and two medium-sized rooms; the hall had 500 seats. Jakob Haass was named as the first cooperative manager in the notice of November 8, 1902. Around 1938 the restaurant was expanded again. From 1977 the restaurant and the hotel were run for about 20 years by Helmut Herold, who renovated and redesigned them in 1987.

From 1997 the building stood empty for about ten years until it was completely renovated in 2006. Since April 2007 the building has housed the "Dürkheimer Haus", u. a. a café-bar, a dance house and a parking garage. The City Spa, also opened in 2007, relocated to Deidesheim in 2009.
