The Ramburg is the ruin of a hilltop castle in the Südliche Weinstrasse district , Rhineland-Palatinate ( Germany ).

geography

The ruins Ramburg is in the Palatinate at 444.2  m above sea level. NHN high Schlossberg above the village of Ramberg , through whose valley the Dernbach (left source brook of the Eisbach ) flows. There are other castle ruins in the vicinity: Modeneck Castle (approx. 2 km east-northeast), Frankenfelsen Castle (approx. 2.5 km east-northeast) and Neuscharfeneck Castle (approx. 2 km southeast).

history

The Ramburg was built as an imperial castle to protect the Trifels castle under the Hohenstaufen in the 12th century. The Reichsministeriales can be traced back to 1163.

In 1519, Hans von Ramburg, the last member of the Ramburger family, sold his castle to the Dalbergers. Six years later, the castle burned down completely during the Peasants' War .

In 1540 the ruins were bought by the Counts of Löwenstein. After it was completely destroyed by a lightning strike in 1560, it was rebuilt as a residential castle.

It was pillaged, but not destroyed, during the Thirty Years War .

It remained inhabited as an official residence until 1638, but fell into more and more decay and was used as a quarry at the beginning of the 18th century.

description

Remains of the mighty shield wall and the palace can already be seen impressively from the valley . In addition, neck ditches , smaller wall remains and a huge rock cellar have been preserved.
