The pass lies within the boundaries of the urban district Neustadt an der Weinstrasse directly north of the border with the municipality of Maikammer in the southern Weinstrasse district . The Kalmithöhenstraße ( Landesstraße 515) runs over the northern flank of the Kalmit mountain ( 672.6 m ) on the southern edge of the pass - there on the district of Maikammer - which reaches its maximum height of 557.9 m near the pass .

The pass is located 5.2 km south-west of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , to whose district most of it belongs, and 4.2 km north-west of Maikammer , whose district is 557.9 m high in the south of the mountain saddle (on the north flank of Kalmit) Position of the L 515.
Waters
To the east of Hahnenschritt, the Wooggraben runs in the Klausental , the water of which flows into the Speyerbach in the Upper Rhine Valley via Schlittgraben, Nellengraben and Kropsbach . The Buchenlochbach , which rises west of the pass, flows a few hundred meters in the Finstertal into the Enggleisbach , whose water also flows through the Kaltenbrunnertalbach to the Speyerbach.
Entrances, walks and views
The Hahnenschritt enables the transition from Klausental in the east to Kaltenbrunnertal via the Buchenloch in the west. There is a path junction ( Wegspinne ) on it, hiking trails lead to Taubenkopf ( 603.8 m ), to Kalmit ( 672.6 m ), over the Zwergberg to Hohen Loog ( 618.7 m ), over the Hüttenhohl ( 476.9 m ) m ) to the Hüttenberg ( 620.1 m ), to the Totenkopf ( 513.7 m ), to the Rotsohlberg ( 607.1 m ) and to the Schafkopf ( 616.8 m ).
While the east side of Hahnenschritt is densely forested, there is a good view to the west of the Middle Palatinate Forest with the Rotsohlberg ( 607.1 m ) and the Oberscheid ( 582.3 m ) in the foreground.
A hikers' car park is located on the mountain pass in the forest on the L 515 . The nearby managed mountain huts of the Palatinate Forest Association are the Totenkopfhütte , the Kalmithaus and the Hohe-Loog-Haus .
