geography

location

The Breitenberg is located in the Palatinate Forest-Vosges du Nord biosphere reserve and in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park . Its summit rises 1.3 km north-west of Sankt Martin and 3 km west-north-west (in each case as the crow flies ) of Maikammer , the common boundary of which runs over the completely wooded mountain. Like the Stotz ( 603.2  m ), with which it is connected in the northwest via a flat saddle (approx.  535  m ), the Wetterkreuzberg ( 400.7  m ), the Taubenkopf ( 603.8  m ), the Hüttenberg ( 620 , 1  m ) and the pulpit ( 531.7  m ), the Breitenberg is one of the foothills and peaks of the Kalmit massif ( 672.6  m ). It is in an exposed location on the eastern edge of the Haardt, so that despite its relatively low altitude , it can be perceived as a striking mountain from locations in the Upper Rhine Plain .

Natural allocation

The Breitenberg belongs to the Palatinate Forest natural area, which is classified as a 3rd order Greater Region in the systematics of the handbook on the natural structure of Germany published by Emil Meynen and Josef Schmithüsen and its subsequent publications . If you look at the internal structure of the natural area , it belongs to the Middle Palatinate Forest and here to the Haardt mountain range, which separates the Palatinate Forest from the Upper Rhine Plain .

In summary, the natural spatial allocation of the Breitenberg follows the following system:

  1. Greater region 1st order: Layer level land on both sides of the Upper Rhine Rift
  2. Greater region 2nd order: Palatinate-Saarland layer level land
  3. Greater region 3rd order: Palatinate Forest
  4. 4th order region (main unit): Middle Palatinate Forest
  5. 5th order region: Haardt

Traffic and walking

The Kalmithöhenstraße, which runs  past the Kalmit to the Hüttenhohl , as part of the state road 515, leads from Maikammer to the high elevations to the northwest of the summit of the Breitenberg . There is a parking lot for hikers to the northwest of the summit. The mountain can be reached via hiking trails from the Alsterweiler district of Maikammer , from Sankt Martin or from the Sankt Martin valley .
