The Eschkopf near Hofstätten in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Südwestpfalz is 608.3  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Palatinate Forest .

geography

location

The Eschkopf is part of the Frankenweide , which is a central massif in the Palatinate Forest and over which the Palatinate main watershed runs. The summit of the mountain, located in the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve and the Palatinate Forest Nature Park , rises about 3.4 km north of Hofstätten (district of Südwestpfalz) and 3.6 km (as the crow flies ) south-southeast of the hamlet of Johanniskreuz in the neighboring district of Kaiserslautern . The mountain is the northernmost of a series of four peaks that exceed 600  m . To the south follow the Mosisberg (approx. 610  m ), the Hortenkopf ( 606.2  m ) and the Weißenberg ( 609.9  m ).

Natural allocation

The Eschkopf belongs to the “Palatinate Forest” natural area, which is classified as a 3rd order Greater Region in the systematics of the handbook of the natural structure of Germany published by Emil Meynen and Josef Schmithüsen and its follow-up publications . If you look at the internal structure of the natural area , it belongs to the Frankenweide or the "High Palatinate Forest", a core area of the Middle Palatinate Forest .

In summary, the natural spatial allocation of the Eschkopf follows the following system:

  1. Greater region 1st order: Layer level land on both sides of the Upper Rhine Rift
  2. Greater region 2nd order: Palatinate-Saarland layer level land
  3. Greater region 3rd order: Palatinate Forest
  4. 4th order region (main unit): Middle Palatinate Forest
  5. 5th order region: Frankenweide or High Palatinate Forest

Waters

About 500 m northwest of the Eschkopf summit rises with the Erlenbach, the strongest source brook of the Speyerbach , which flows eastwards directly to the Rhine ; Around 900 m east of the summit is the source of the Wellbach , whose water first heads south, then over the Queich also eastwards towards the Rhine. The upper tributaries of the Schwarzbach , which itself rises below Johanniskreuz, have their sources on the western flank of the mountain. Its water reaches the Rhine to the west via Blies , Saar and Moselle .

Protected areas

The north and north-west flanks of the Eschkopf fall - below the B 48  - into the fauna-flora-habitat area of the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve (FFH no. 6812-301; 359.97  km² ) and the Palatinate Forest bird sanctuary (VSG no. 6812 -401; 30.233 km²).

Buildings

The plateau-like summit area has two striking structures: the approximately 20 m high Eschkopfturm was built in 1902 for the purpose of measurements . As a lookout tower with 98 steps, it allows a wide panoramic view from Donnersberg in the north over the Kalmit in the east to the French Alsace in the south. About 1 km to the northeast, at a height of 585.3  m, is the tower of the secondary radar system Palatinate Forest of the German air traffic control .

Traffic and walking

The winding federal highway 48 leads north and east past the summit region of the Eschkopf . It runs from Hochspeyer in the north, through Johanniskreuz, over the Eschkopf plateau, reaching 549.5  m on the north flank of the mountain , and through the Wellbach valley to Annweiler am Trifels in the south. At the junction to Iggelbach , a bus stop is served twice from Neustadt an der Weinstrasse on Sundays and public holidays in the summer months.

The European long-distance hiking trail E8 runs a little south past the mountain peak . It is from Esch head out possible until Leimen , Kaiserslautern-Mölschbach , Elmstein and forestry houses Taubensuhl and Heldenstein almost to Neustadt on the wine trail to hike on continuous mountain ranges without the 450 m - height line to go below. The roads in the Eschkopf area are rated as demanding by sporty cyclists because of their inclines.
